About The Coffee

Riara Estate, located in Kenya, has a rich history dating back to the 1920s when it was initially established by settlers. In 1972, the farm was acquired by the community-based group KIST, which has since contributed to its sustainable development. Spanning 74 hectares, Riara Estate is home to nearly 80,000 coffee trees, primarily of the SL 28, SL 34, and Ruiru 11 varieties. Situated in a region with abundant rainfall, the estate does not require irrigation, benefiting from the natural climate of the area.

The farm is nestled in volcanic soil rich in minerals, surrounded by diverse indigenous flora and fauna, which further enhances its unique terroir. Coffee production at Riara Estate is a community effort, overseen by an 8-member committee and supported by staff from the surrounding villages. The estate employs a wet processing method for its coffee, which is then carefully dried on raised tables to preserve its exceptional quality.

SL-28 / SL-34

This coffees is from the famous SL-28 and SL-34 varietals which tend to have unmatched sweetness with a dynamic flavor profile. SL-28 is among the most well-known and well-regarded varieties of Africa. It has consequently spread from Kenya, where it was originally selected in the 1930s, to other parts of Africa and now to Latin America.
