About The Coffee

Kiamugumo factory, located in Ngariama, Kirinyaga County, on the slopes of Mount Kenya, processes coffee, including peaberry, from smallholders who deliver ripe cherries to washing stations. The region enjoys a year-round climate of 12-25°C, with the main coffee harvest from October to January and a secondary crop from April to June.

Producers transport coffee cherries to the factory by horse or motorcycle, where they are washed and depulped with water from the Kii River. The coffee, including peaberry, is then dried on raised beds to 11-13% moisture before being sent to the Central Kenya Coffee Mill for grading.

The factory, managed by a dedicated team, emphasizes environmental conservation by using soak pits for wastewater and encouraging tree planting. Kiamugumo also supports farmers through training, sustainable practices, and educational initiatives. The nearby glaciers of Mount Kenya, an extinct volcano, feed the Kii River, vital for the coffee processing at the station.

Peaberry Coffee

Kenya Peaberries are a natural mutation of the coffee seed, forming a single, small, rounder bean instead of the usual two “flat beans” found inside a coffee cherry. These smaller, denser peaberries are believed to pack a more intense flavor, with “peaberry plus” being a higher grade than the standard peaberry lot. They are often slightly more expensive due to their limited availability (as peaberries occur in a smaller percentage of the overall coffee crop) and the additional labor required to sort them.
