  • Pros

Double Probe System: The innovative double probe system in the Lelit Mara X, maintains a consistent brewing temperature, reducing the wait time between each coffee and preventing the overheating commonly associated with traditional HX systems.
Advanced Controls: The Lelit Mara X has advanced mode settings called Xmode coffee or Xmode steam which gives the barista more control based on roast or drink type (more information on these below in the FAQ)

58mm Group Head: Standard 58mm group head giving customers the ability to purchase all of the professional grade parts and accessories, bottomless portafilters, baskets, and WDT accessories.

  • Cons

Lacks full temperature control: While the Mara X is sleek and almost looks like a mini Bianca, it does lack some features like full temperature control that is seen on the lower cost Victoria.

Slim Profile: The slim profile while nice, does mean that everything is quite cramped on the machine. Expect the brew lever, steam wand, and hot water spout to feel tight when working on the machine.

Lelit Mara X FAQ

What does the Xmode Steam button do on the Lelit Mara X?

In this mode, the machine works as if it was a dual boiler. The software focuses on the both boiler and the heat exchanger, guaranteeing steam availability after the brewing process is concluded.

In this scenario, the temperature profile of the brewing process is less stable and precise over the use of the product.

Overall, the machine has higher steam performances. The HX Boiler works more intensively to balance the thermal fluctuation inside the boiler during the brewing process. The heating element is highly active:

  1. During coffee brewing to maintain stable the thermal brewing profile
  2. After coffee brewing to generate enough steam Best scenario of use: flat white

What does the Xmode Coffee button do on the Lelit Mara X?

In this mode, the machine works as if it was a single boiler with PID control. The software turns off the steam boiler during coffee brewing, on the one hand, reducing the risk of overheating (typical problem of HX machines) and on the other hand, increasing the thermal stability. To recognize the setting the user is in, they just need to turn off and back on the machine; if the led of the power button blinks, it means that the Xmode coffee is active.

Best scenario of use: specialty coffee (light – roasted coffee beans)

How do you change temperatures on the Lelit Mara X?

TEMPERATURE SETTING - This switch is still located behind the drip tray and its function is to change the temperature range between I Hot, 0 Warm, II Extra Hot. More specifically the different temperatures allow the user to brew coffees with different characteristics: •

  1. SETTING I: 92°C – balanced, nutty and chocolatey cup (light-roast) •
  2. SETTING 0: 90°C – fruity, acidity and smooth cup (mid-roast) •
  3. SETTING II: 94°C - bitter and more intensive cup (dark-roast)

How long are Lelit Espresso machines expected to last with proper use and care?

Espresso machines of the prosumer class, especially those constructed from robust materials like stainless steel, copper, and brass, are celebrated for their durability and extended lifespan.

Lelit Espresso Machines, when maintained and serviced as recommended, can last over 15 years.

However, users often replace these machines before they fully exhaust their potential lifespan, driven by the desire for upgrades. Remarkably, Italian commercial-grade machines from the 60s and 70s, similar in build quality to Lelit machines, are still operational today after restorations.

Lelit's machines, handcrafted in small Italian workshops, embody this enduring legacy of quality and longevity, provided they receive appropriate care.

What is an Espresso PID Controller?

Temperature stability is crucial for brewing coffee, and different brew methods and roasts require different temperatures.

The Lelit Mara X features a PID controller, short for Proportional-Integral Derivative, which helps to ensure temperature stability in the espresso machine. These controllers use the PID algorithm to determine the best way to control the temperature in the machine and are more accurate than traditional thermostat-based espresso machines. They also allow you to directly control the temperature of the machine and are usually visible on the machine with control buttons to increase or decrease the brewing temperature. This feature is particularly useful for home baristas who like to experiment with different roasts and temperatures.

Do you need a PID for your espresso machine?

A PID temperature controller is not a necessary component for an espresso machine to operate, but it does provide an added level of precision and consistency in temperature control for baristas.

What is the Lelit LCC System?

The LELIT Electronic Control System (LCC) on Lelit Espresso Machines offers versatility with adjustable extraction profiles, pre-infusion settings, and individual boiler temperature controls. The machine also features an Economy mode, which turns off the steam boiler to save energy, while maintaining the desired temperature in the coffee boiler.

What type of water should be used in your espresso machine?

To minimize scale buildup and ensure a good taste, it's best to use filtered or bottled water in your espresso machine. However, using RO (reverse osmosis) or distilled water is not recommended, as these types of water lack the necessary minerals for a delicious shot and may cause problems with the machine's water sensor.

Where are Lelit Espresso Machines manufactured?

All Lelit espresso machines, including the Mara X, are hand-built in Italy!

How do you descale your Lelit Espresso machine?

Descaling is an important part of maintaining your Lelit Espresso machine, but it should be done with caution. If not done properly, regular descaling can lead to damage of the group head and void your warranty. To avoid this, it is recommended to clean and maintain your machine regularly, and have it descaled by a professional technician. This way, you can ensure that the descaling process will not cause any damage to the machine.

What outlet does the Lelit Mara X use?

The Lelit Mara X uses a standard 110V plug.

What kind of pump does the Lelit Mara X use?

The Lelit Mara X uses a vibratory pump.

What makes the E61 group head so special?

The E-61 group is a feature that provides consistency and enhances the flavor of the espresso. It circulates hot water through the boiler and group head continuously, maintaining the appropriate brew temperature range at the group head. Additionally, its automatic pre-infusion function saturates the coffee in the group head when you start extraction, leading to a more evenly extracted and refined flavor profile. The best part is that this feature operates on its own, so it does not require any special actions from the user to benefit from its performance. This is the result of good design.

What size baskets come with the Lelit Mara X?

The Lelit Victoria machine comes equipped with several high-grade IMS filter baskets including:

  1. Coffee Slide spout / LELIT58 1 dose filter (9-11 g), IMS
  2. LELIT58 2 doses filter (14-18 g), IMS
  3. LELIT58 2 doses filter (18-21 g), IMS
  4. LELIT58 blind filter, IMS

Can I leave my Lelit Espresso machine on all day?

While some people leave their Lelit Espresso machines on all day, it's not recommended. To prolong the lifespan of the machine, it's best to turn it on in the morning and turn it off when no longer in use to minimize the internal components exposure to heat over time.
