Executive Summary
Every year, Cup of Excellence competitions identify some of the highest-scoring coffees produced around the world. Winning coffee often becomes a benchmark for quality, influencing roasters, importers, producers, and coffee enthusiasts alike. Yet despite the competition's influence, relatively little long-term analysis has examined what these results reveal about specialty coffee as a whole.
To better understand the patterns behind exceptional coffee, we at Coffee Bros. analyzed 3,897 published Cup of Excellence coffees spanning the 2010–2026 calendar period, representing sixteen competition years across fifteen producing countries. After standardizing country, variety, and processing data, we examined how these factors relate to competition performance.
The findings challenge several common assumptions. No single country consistently dominates competition. No single coffee variety guarantees exceptional quality. While experimental processing continues to expand, traditional methods remain responsible for many of the world's highest-scoring coffees. Above all, the data suggests that exceptional coffee is rarely explained by one variable alone.
Instead, outstanding coffees emerge through the combination of genetics, environment, producer skill, processing, and careful roasting.
Introduction
Exceptional coffee has never been more visible than it is today.
Coffee drinkers can now identify farms, producers, processing methods, elevations, fermentation techniques, and coffee varieties with remarkable detail. Few organizations have contributed more to this transparency than Cup of Excellence.
At Coffee Bros., we've followed these competitions for years—not simply because they showcase remarkable coffees, but because they reveal broader trends across producing countries. Every competition introduces new producers, new varieties, and new ideas that continue pushing specialty coffee forward.
Rather than asking which country produces the "best" coffee, we wanted to understand the bigger picture. Using sixteen years of published competition results, we looked for the patterns that consistently appear among exceptional coffees while recognizing that great coffee is never defined by a single statistic.

This report analyzes 3,897 published Cup of Excellence coffees representing competitions held between 2010 and 2026, covering sixteen competition years across fifteen producing countries.
Country, variety, and processing information were standardized to create meaningful comparisons across years. Of the complete dataset, 2,387 records contain sufficient varietal information for variety-based analysis. Reported varietal names were normalized using the World Coffee Research Coffee Varieties Catalog wherever a catalog match was available, including common spelling, language, accent, and formatting variants such as Geisha and Gesha, Borbon and Bourbon, and Tipica and Typica.
Multi-variety coffees were retained as blends rather than collapsed into a single generic category. When percentages were reported, the variety with the largest stated share was designated the primary variety. When percentages were not available, the first recognized variety was used as the primary variety and the remaining varieties were preserved in a standardized variety list. Each primary variety was also assigned a broader genetic family, and World Coffee Research attributes—including stature, bean size, quality potential, disease resistance, lineage, and breeder—were stored in a linked variety dictionary for future research. Processing methods were grouped into broader families such as washed, natural, honey, and experimental.
These findings describe performance within Cup of Excellence competitions rather than global coffee quality. World Coffee Research attributes describe expected varietal performance under appropriate conditions and should not be interpreted as guarantees of competition results.
Finding 1: Country Matters—But Less Than Many People Think
Origin remains one of the first characteristics consumers consider when buying specialty coffee. Yet when viewed across sixteen years of Cup of Excellence results, the differences between participating countries are much narrower than many expect.
Rather than revealing one dominant producing nation, the data shows a remarkably competitive field where multiple countries consistently produce exceptional coffees. Sample size and consistency matter just as much as average score. Country provides valuable context, but exceptional coffee is ultimately created by individual producers rather than political borders.

Finding 2: Variety Shapes Potential, Not Destiny
Coffee varieties influence sweetness, acidity, body, disease resistance, plant structure, yield, and cup profile. Several varieties consistently appear among high-scoring coffees, yet no single variety guarantees exceptional quality.
The expanded database allows this question to be examined at two levels. The first compares individual primary varieties after spelling and naming conventions have been standardized. The second compares broader genetic groups—including Bourbon–Typica-related varieties, Ethiopian landraces, introgressed varieties, and F1 hybrids. This distinction matters because coffees sold under different varietal names may share a closely related genetic background, while blends can contain several distinct varieties.
Some of the highest averages may belong to varieties represented by only a few competition entries, highlighting why sample size matters. Variety rankings should therefore use a minimum-entry threshold and be presented alongside sample size, median score, score variability, number of producing countries, and the share of coffees reaching 90 points.
Genetics establish potential, but farming, environment, harvesting, processing, drying, storage, and roasting determine how that potential is realized. The enriched dataset also creates a foundation for later research into whether traits identified by World Coffee Research—such as plant stature, bean size, quality potential, or rust resistance—correspond with competition performance. Those trait-level conclusions belong in the deeper genetics and science reports rather than being overstated in this introductory volume.

Finding 3: Processing Innovation Is Reshaping Specialty Coffee
Traditional washed and natural coffees continue to define specialty coffee, while experimental fermentation methods have expanded dramatically during the past decade.
The data suggests innovation has broadened coffee's sensory possibilities without replacing the importance of exceptional raw material. Experimental processing can elevate great coffee, but it cannot create quality where it does not exist.
Traditional Processing Methods:
Coffee Bros. Insight: In 2018, 98% of all processing methods fell into one of three traditional categories: Washed, Natural, or Honey. These percentages began to shrink, with the traditional washed method seeing the largest pullback in favor of more honey, natural, and alternative processing methods.
Non-Traditional Processing Methods:

Insight: The growth of coffees classified as Anaerobic, Natural Anaerobic, and Washed Anaerobic started to explode starting in 2019, while the Fermented/Experimental categories began to take off in 2023 and represented the largest share of alternative processing methods in 2025 and 2026 (YTD through July)
Finding 4: Ninety-Point Coffees Remain Exceptionally Rare
Even within Cup of Excellence, coffees scoring 90 points or higher remain relatively uncommon. Most award-winning coffees fall below this threshold while still representing extraordinary quality.
Scores provide useful context, but memorable coffee experiences are defined by flavor rather than numbers alone.

Insight: Coffees that score higher than 90pts remain largely consistent post-2017; there is a clear outlier in coffees scoring over 90pts in 2017, which created a massive shelf of coffees scoring above 90 pts, where the 6 years prior to 2017 only an average of 8% of coffees that won the Cup of Excellence scored above 90pts.
* In 2016, only 3 countries participated in the Cup of Excellence, which drastically skewed the results (Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala). These three are among the top 5 in having the most recorded 90+pt coffees.
Processing Contribution to 90+ Point Coffees:
Coffee Bros. Insight: Over the past eight years, the share of 90+ point coffees has increased alongside the growing adoption of non-traditional processing methods. While this relationship does not establish causation, it suggests processing innovation has become an increasingly important characteristic among many of the highest-scoring competition coffees.
Finding 5: Ninety-Point Coffees Remain Exceptionally Rare
Perhaps the most significant trend is not rising scores but richer information. Competition records increasingly document varieties, fermentation methods, elevations, producer biographies, and processing details.
This transparency benefits producers, roasters, and consumers alike by connecting quality to the decisions that create it.
On the flip side, it also creates a market for massive inflation as global competition pushes these winning coffees to new heights in terms of prices each year.
Coffee Bros. Insight: Fifteen years ago, many of the analyses in this report were impossible. Increasingly detailed competition records—including variety, fermentation method, producer information, elevation, and processing—have transformed Cup of Excellence from a simple ranking into one of the richest publicly available specialty coffee datasets.
Finding 6: Consistency May Matter More Than Peak Performance
Average scores reveal which countries perform well overall, but they do not show how reliably those results are produced. To examine consistency, we compared each country’s average competition score with the standard deviation of its scores. A lower standard deviation indicates that results were more tightly concentrated, while a higher figure reflects a broader range of outcomes.
The comparison reveals that high average performance and consistency do not always occur together. Brazil recorded the highest average score in the dataset, while Colombia combined one of the highest averages with lower score variability. Costa Rica also maintained a high average, but its broader distribution indicates a wider range of competition outcomes.
Countries with fewer competitions, including Taiwan and Ecuador, appear particularly strong in this comparison, although their smaller samples require more cautious interpretation. Meanwhile, countries such as Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador have competed across many more years and generated hundreds of winning coffees, increasing both the depth and variability of their results.
Coffee Bros. Insight: The country with the highest average score is not necessarily the one with the most consistent results. Colombia stands out for combining a high average score with comparatively low variability, while several of the most active competition countries show a much wider range of outcomes.
Coffee Bros. Perspective
Country, variety, and processing each contribute to coffee quality, but none can explain exceptional coffee on its own. Producer skill, attention to detail, and continual refinement remain the common thread among the world's best coffees. The data reinforces that exceptional coffee emerges through complementary strengths rather than a single defining characteristic.
For us, following Cup of Excellence competitions has never been about chasing the highest score. It has been about learning from producers who continue raising the standard for specialty coffee.
This report reinforces what we describe as the Power of Two: exceptional coffee is created when complementary strengths work together—producer and roaster, art and science, coffee and community. No single country, variety, or processing method guarantees greatness. Exceptional coffee is the product of many complementary decisions rather than any single defining characteristic.
Exceptional coffee is never the result of one decision. It is the result of hundreds of decisions made well, together.
