About The Coffee

We found the Floripondio coffee, auctioned in the "Exotics" category during the 2022 private Cup of Excellence auction. The coffee was remarkably clean, juicy taste with notes of orange and raisin, rounded out by a hint of maple body.

After tasting this coffee, we knew we found a lifelong partner in Bolivia. We were lucky enough to purchase not one but two “mini lot” offerings from Floripondio this year, both scoring over 88pts.

Batian, which was developed at the Coffee Research Station (now the Coffee Research Institute, CRI) in Ruiru, Kenya, is a resilient coffee variety that shows resistance to both coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease. This distinctive coffee cultivar was officially introduced in Kenya in the year 2010. The creation of Batian involved a meticulous process of single-tree selections from the fifth filial (F5) generations, which were descendants of the male parent from certain Ruiru 11 progenies. Notably, Batian is a composite variety which combines genetic traits from three distinct pure-line varieties. The original crosses that contributed to Batian's genetic makeup encompassed SL28, SL34, Rume Sudan, N39, K7, SL4, and the Timor Hybrid.

As with all our specialty micro-lots, we recommend brewing Floripondio as a pour-over for the best taste experience, although it can also be enjoyed as a fun espresso with a dash of milk.

The Revival of Bolivian Coffee

Bolivia's coffee production dates back to 1880 when large landowners dominated the industry. However, despite its long history, the country has remained a minor player in the global market due to its limited production. In recent years, coffee exports from Bolivia have declined, dropping from 70,000 bags in 2010 to only 22,000 bags in 2019. To tackle this issue and ensure fair prices for coffee farmers, Agricafe has introduced two initiatives, the "Fincas Los Rodriguez" and the "Sol de la Mañana Program".

Agricafe is a Bolivian family-owned coffee company that produces coffee from its own farms and sources premium micro lots from small farmers in Los Yungas and Santa Cruz. Established in 1986 by Pedro Rodriguez, who was driven by his love for agriculture, Agricafe has become a leading player in South American specialty coffee. With over 36 years of experience in the coffee industry, Pedro is now joined by his daughter Daniela and son Pedro Pablo in running the company. Their goal is to revive and enhance Bolivian coffee by implementing producer training programs and expanding their farms across Los Yungas and Santa Cruz.
